Bamboo Rod Questions

Question
Mac,
As you requested here is the basic info on the two bamboo fly rods I have.  Both are about 100 years old.  Not much identifying info on them.
- Rod #1: 108" long.  3 sections, each 37" long. Duplicate 37" long top section.  No labels or markings on the rod. But the case its with says "Montague Trail Split Bamboo Rod" on it.
- Rod #2: 108" overall length.  3 sections of 37" each.  There is a fourth (duplicate) top section also 37" long.  There is a lable just above the handle. Looks like a decal with a picture of a fisherman. Brand name "Brooklure".  Opposite of that is the word "Cardinal".

Thats all i have on them.  Any info you can provide as to history or value would be appreciated. Thanks

Emery

Answer
Emery,
Got your pictures and thanks for asking the questions on all experts.

Your rods were made by Horrocks-Ibbotson and Montague , they are not very valuable.
Both are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were sort of mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. They are not going to resale for very much.
A small portion of these rods are decent fishing tools . It is the collector community that decides the prices , please  don't blame the messenger.
I find two books are available at larger libraries to get history and or value:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) ,add 30% due to the age of the book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair
A website with Horrocks-Ibbotson  historical type information on HI:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2h7gi/fishnbanjossliceoflifeincyberspacecopy/id22.h...

Rod 1 It looks like a Montague , cork sheet grips not rounds . Up to the 20s they wrapped decorative wraps called intermediates every 1-3 inches. They quit when they started using modern glue.  They made a Trail model from the 20s to the 40s. In the 20s it cost $20 was #3 of 7 in quality according to Sinclair. Homel doesn't mention it.
Homel gives the 9 Montague model Fishkill c. 1938 with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of  $20, 70 and $140 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. You could almost double the value for the Trail.

Compare Montague ferrules at :
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/7762/ferrules.htm

It's a guess and please don't quote me - unless I see the rod I can't even be sure it is a Trail or Montague.

Rod 2 The Brooklure fly rods appear to have been made for Spiegel by the Horrocks-Ibbotson company.  They were sold through their mail order catalog by Spiegel. The value is similar to above.

Before you think you have 2 $300 rods check ebay. I see for HIs  selling  from 10 to $75. It would be difficult to explain  that yours is an HI so less. Montague 10 to $200.

Both of your rods are in poor condition with threads unraveling and missing guides.

Luck,
Mac
