Maryland Fishing
Question
Hi. I have an almost 6 year old son who is excited to try fishing for the first time. I know nothing about fishing. We live in the Washington DC area, and I am looking for a place to rent fishing gear, buy bait, and go fishing in an area nearby where it is very easy to catch something so that my son can have a successful first effort at fishing. To prevent sea sickness, I'd like to fish off a stationary land surface for his first experience, such as a dock or a pier or a beach and not go out on a charter fishing boat. It would also be helpful to fish with a guide who can direct us with both the how and the where to fish. Please recommend several places and guides in the greater Washington, DC area. Thanks!
Answer
If it does not have to be Saltwater Fishing, then I would recommend a friend of mine on the Potomac River. He fishes for bass, which are very prominent on the river. He is very experienced, has fished the pro circuit, and is a great teacher. National Bass Guide Service

I do not know anyone who rents tackle.. However, if there is a commercial pier in your area, on saltwater, they may rent tackle. The best fishing though for kids is to go to a pond with a LOT of bluegill, and to fish for those with small baits. Almost any stocked lake has a good spot for bluegill. Talk to a local tackle dealer about where to go for those. They are small but plentiful. You can get a Zebco rod and reel for about $15.00 and worms are cheap as are bee moths, or grubs. Heck you can even dig your own. Go to a neighborhood tackle store for the best info. Those folks depend on knowing the loclal fishing holes while the big box stores might be staffed by folks with no knowledge of the area.
