Info. on old orvis bamboo rod
Question
I have a 7 1/2' split bamboo fly rod in good condition with the following markings. On the butt end cap is stamped Orvis Impregnated patent pending. On the butt section is writted "Battenskill" "Orvis Impregnated" "patent pending" and on the butt end and on both tips is the date of 5-9-59. It is in an aluminum tube with the end cap missing and no markings on the tube or the cloth bag. What can you tell me about the rod, and do you know the value of this rod in good to very good condition? Thanks for any information you can give me.
Answer
Hi Jack,
An Orvis Battenkill fly rod at 7.5' with both tips, bag and tube in Good to Very Good condition would be valued in the $500-$600 range. The missing tube cap is a minor problem that would downgrade the value a little bit.
Keep in mind that the values in the references bnook I have are at least 6 years old. With that in mind, I did adjust the figures a bit to reflect inflation and a probable increased value of the rod. The shorter bamboo rods are always the more sought after and the more valuable rods. The actual value of your rod depends on the actual condition of the rod and whatever a potential buyer might be willing to pay for it.
It sounds like a nice rod.
Thanks, Joe
