Loose reel seat

Question
I have an old custom saltwater rod that has a loose reel seat.Is there a glue that can be injected to resecure it.Thanks Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

Any waterproof or water resistant two-part epoxy should work. You can get a 5-minute or a 15-minute version of suitable epoxy at any big box or hardware store.  How you inject it is the problem.

Normally, I would remove the reel seat and re-seat it with new epoxy.  If the rod comes apart at the reel seat, or you can remove the reel seat without damagaing the rest of the rod, this is what I would recommend.

I suppose you could come up with a syringe, maybe something from a veternarian, that would work for the injector and have a large enough needle to flow the epoxy.  Then drill a hole in the reel seat just large enough for the end of the syringe and slowly inject some epoxy.  You might have to do this in multiple places to solve the problem.

This will be a one time thing (unless you get more than one syringe) as the epoxy will likely set up in the syringe even if you take it apart and clean it really well.  Clean up of the epoxy...any excess, spills, drops or smears on your fingers or the reel seat...can be done with Isopropyl alcohol and a coffee filter.  Have a filter soaked in alcohol handy when you start.

Thanks,  Joe
