Carboloy Fly Rod
Question
Joe,
I saw your recent answer to a question about a rod with a Carboloy label, and I have a similar question. My son was given a rod that belonged to someone now deceased. The rod is labeled Carboloy stripper guide 4625 8'6" on the rod and has a sticker from Betts Tackle, Park Falls, Wis. I'm hoping that you can tell us something about it.
Many thanks.
Answer
Hi Claudia,
I didn't find anything on Betts Tackle, in Wisconsin. There are some other Betts tackle shops in other states, but I don't know if they are associated with the one in Wisconsin or not.
If the label refers to the rod, it is likely a True Temper ord made with the Betts name on it. If it refers only to the stripper guide, then the stripper guide is made of that tempered alloy, but that doesn't tell us anything about the origin of the rod.
I would guess, and it's only a guess, that it is a typical fiberglass rod with no real collector value. This does not mean it is a bad rod, only that it's not rare. I presume it will perform well as a fishing tool.
Thanks, Joe
