Uslan Fly Rod Identification
Question
I just purchased an uslan bamboo flyrod on ebay and all looks good except there are no uslan markings anywhere on rod. Is this common? It's an 8' 2/2 penta/impregnated w/all cork handle/reel seat. Handle has thumb & finger grooves. Has Super Z ferrules, and is marked "8014 8Ft. 4 1/4 Oz. 6-'49" on one side of lower butt section. Windings are brown and bamboo is also a light brown (not tan). Rod looks very nice but dark glue lines also show. Do you think it's an ulsan? Again, very nice condition, I pd $535,
so while I'm here...ball park value?
Thanks much,
Mark
Answer
Mark,
Nat Uslan produced two distinct series of five-strip rods; the Deluxe model with a resin impregnation finish, and the Spencer model with a traditional varnish finish. Both series were produced in two-piece and three-piece versions, ranging in length from seven to nine feet
I would not expect Uslan to have a label or ,logo.
I would expect a model number, length , weight of rod and date on it .
It should be 5 sided, and have nickel silver super "Z" ferrules(invented by Nat Uslan). I can't say if it is a Uslan for sure from the small amount of information that I have but I am guessing it probably is. I would need detail good pictures of the ferrules to be sure that they are super Z type.
Uslan is mentioned in Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & V model.alue Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
I am assuming you have a Deluxe model. Homel gives the 7.5 model Uslan Deluxe trout fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $165, 395 and $650 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
A two section rod is more valuable while a longer rod is less.
Value: I would say maybe 550 but there aren't any subjective facts to back that up.
Luck,
Mac
