South Bend 323-9 fly rod
Question
I came across a South Bend 323-9 fly rod that my father had for 40+ years. It is still in the canvas bag and there are 4 sections. The base, the middle section and 2 tips. One of the tips is missing the top eyelet but the rod is not broken. I would say it is in very good condition, usable out of the bag. I was wondering what a fair market value would be?
Answer
Dan,
The Price book:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the 8.5 South Bend model #323 with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $35, 90 and $165 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
An 9 foot rod is less collectible and valuable. Ax well the 59 model series were not the top of a medium price line.
Your rod can NOT be in very good condition if it is missing a tip top guide. Most people who have not seen a number of bamboo fly rods over evaluate the condition of their rods.
Your rod is dry fly action indicated by the initial 3.
If I had pictures I might change my mind but I give you this guestimate of $75.
Split Bamboo rod!
Lots of Big Bass minimal action!
