sun fishing
Question
My local lake has a sign that says the kind of fish you can
catch along with creel limits and so on.
It says you can catch sunfish there
I am wondering how i would go about to catch these fish?
could you tell me how to set up my line bobbers, sinkers,
hooks?
And what would I use for bait?
Answer
Hi Ian,
Sunfish are very similar to Bluegills. I'd say 4 pound test, and small floats. Light pencil floats or round bobbers no more than 3/4" diameter are all that is needed. Maybe one or two very small BB shot to ballast the bobber. Their mouths are very small so I'd stay with a #8 or 10 light wire, long shank Aberdeen hook.
Sunfish like small bits of nightcrawler, garden worms, crickets, and my favorite, wax worms. I have caught some of my biggest Sunnies on small crappie minnows too.
Look for them around weeds. Weed edges, Lilly pads, fallen trees, and any other shoreline cover.
They are eager biters and a good eating fish.
Good fishin'
