J.C. Higgins fly reel

Question
Hi, I recently inherited my grandfather's old fly rod, a two-piece rod in nice shape with a green label that says "J.C. Higgins by Sears & Roebuck" and has "2969" written or stamped on the wood. The handle is cork and it was stored in a green canvas sleeve inside an aluminum tube.  My questions are: 1) what model reel was sold with this rod? (i.e., I'd like to buy one) and 2) should I use this rod for fishing or would I be better off buying a modern rod of better quality?  Thanks!

Your rod is probably made in the 1930s thru early 50s. These old bamboo rods have a tendency to dry out inside making them brittle. Depending on condition, unfortunately its not very valuable because its Sears - if in excellent condition $30-40. But they look really nice.

However, I would consider getting a nice Pflueger Progress reel for it. They sell on ebay for $10-$20.

For fishing, I would recommend using a nice fiberglass rod. Again you can pick them up used on eBay or buy one new.

I like the later Eagle Claw fly rods...they are above average quality and readily available on eBay etc.
