Fishin in the Great Lakes??
Question
I live down in the south part of lake Ontario, Right by 50 point marina, Hamilton. I need a lot of help fishing in and around this marina from the shores. In the marina, along the docks and under the boats there are lots of 10-15LBS salmon and carp. however they swim around near the to of the water very slowly and avoid anything i cast in. Are there any lures that you think would work well to get their attention, or times i should be trying? also There is a man-made river that connects the marina to the lake, therefore it is deep. As the sun goes down do you think many fish would swim in through it during the summer? and what kinds? Tons of thanks in advance. Fishing is my favorite sport, well it was before i moved out of the bay of quinte, because now i cant catch anything.
Answer
Jordan; I should really pass this one to somebody else since I have never wet a line in the any of the great lakes, but I do not like to refuse questions. Maybe I can give you a little help to get more help.
Fishing the Great lakes should be no different than fishing any other lake, especially from shore. If you know how to catch the fish that you see in Lake Ontario in any other lake you should be able to catch these. I suspect, however, that where you are trying to fish the water must be very clear for you to see the fish. This always makes for more difficult fishing because if you can see the fish they can see you.
First I might ask, do you see other people fishing and catching the fish you are seeing? If so watch and see how they do it. I would even ask anyone who was successful in catching fish to show me how to do it. Most people will usually be glad to show or tell you how to do it. See what kind of tackle they are using, what kinds of baits, what kind of hooks and how they approach their fishing. If you run into one who is not willing to help try another. Don't be afraid to ask.
One thing for sure if the fish see you they will seldom bite so make sure your approach to the bank is made carefully. Use anything you can find for cover and do not make noise on the bank as this can be heard by the fish.
I am relatively certain that the channel connecting the marina to the lake at times has fish moving through it otherwise how would they get into the marina in the first place. Again how to approach this fishing is best discovered by watching other fishermen and imitating them.
I am sorry I cannot be more specific but if I were there I would learn from watching others. I have done that many times in many places. Of course asking someone who works at the marina if they know anyone who could coach you wouldn't hurt.
I hope this has been of some help but it is kind of like the blind leading the blind. I am sure if you observe and ask you will learn to catch fish there.
Thanks for calling on me to try answering your question. Good luck in finding a good fisherman to follow.
