Occupied Japan fly fishing set
Question
We have an unopened, unused fly fishing set with bamboo rod, extra flies, extra tip ,leaders, bobbers, sinkers all in original wooden case. It still has the "Made in occupied Japan" sticker on the bottom. It also has an instruction booklet in the case. I was just wondering what the estimated value of this item would be since it is a complete, unused set that is in excellent condition.
Answer
Hi Peg,
Typically, the rods made in occupied Japan do not bring high prices and are not highly sought after by collectors. A good one might run in the $50-$75 range with everything original.
However, I can add to that comment that an unused set, complete and in original mint condition can bring more. I had one like this that sold for $175 about 6 years ago. It is not easy to find the right buyer, and if I recall correctly, my set was in the store for over two years before it sold. But it can be done.
I would think that you could consider your set valued in the $100-$125 range. If you try to sell it, you may or may not get that price. If you hold out long enough, you probably can get that price for it or pretty close to that price.
Most of these rods were average fishing rods at best. Like anything else, some that were made were actually pretty good. You have to inspect them carefully and even try test casting them to get a feel for the rod before buying...but you can find one now and then that fishes pretty well.
One concern to be aware of is that sitting for so long with no use may have allowed the glues to dry a bit and the ferrules may be a bit loose. If they are not, great, If they are loose, applying mild heat may reflow the glue or they could be removed and reseated by a rod builder. As long as the threads were properly coated to begin with, they should be OK. The cork and reel seat should be fine.
Thanks, Joe
