Antique Bamboo Surf Fishing Pole Eyelets
Question
I am trying to restore an antique (1930's) bamboo surf fishing pole. I am trying to find a source for guides of that era. The pole is at least eight feet long. Can you suggest some sources of period guides? Thank you, John
Answer
Hi John,
Depending on which type of guides were used on the rod, the answer is a little different.
If the rod originally had agate lined guides, you can find those singly or in sets salvaged from old rods and offered for sale in the online auctions at reasonable prices. Reasonable being anywhere from $5 to $25 per guide. I spent most of this past winter locating a set for a vintage boat rod and finally found them.
You can buy new agate guides from some of the larger supply houses like Golden Witch, Mudhole, Angler's Workshop, etc. They may or may not be able to match the older agate guides exactly.
If the rod originally had all metal guides, these are available at most suppliers (including my components shop) and they do match the older guides in style and sizes. These are relatively inexpensive. New tiptops are also available.
Thanks, Joe
