South Bend Model 57C
Question
Hello, I have a south bend model 57C, it's a 3pc rod. I know you ask for photos, My main question is if this rod it worth anything? I plan to re-build this rod and just bought it for the cane, but B4 I do I want to make sure it's not worth anything.
Answer
Shane ,
I assume you mean cash money when you ask for value.
I have a list of SB models with numbers only. I think the "C" is line weight - equivalent to 7 weight in modern lines.
Price Book: Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book
How to DIY: Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
Both of these books might be in your library especially Homel.
Homel gives the 8.5 SB model #57 with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $35, 90 and $165 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
The #157 is Trout Action, #57 is Bass Action, and #357 is Dry Fly Action. SO yours is real slow.
Shorter rods sell for more.
There are less valuable rods made by Montague and Horrocks-Ibbotson to do your first practice restore.
If you restore this rod and remove the labels / logos , the rod looses all collectors value , even though it is a great fishing tool.
I hope this helps.
Luck,
Mac
