Six sided rod
Question
I have an old six sided rod with a base that can support a fly reel or can be reversed for spin cast. There is a blue rubber plug on the base to plug whichever side you are not using. It has one main section that attaches to the base and three different rod tips. There are no indications of a manufactuer anywhere on the rod or case.
The case from a few feet looks like a section of 2x4. The hardware on the case is very simple, but the metal snaps that seure it have some detail to it, art deco like.
If you e-mail me bak I will send pics but what is your initial thoughts?
Answer
Todd,
Just a guess I think you have a Japanese rod. It could be a Montague or a Horrocks-Ibbotson. All three made cast to fly rod switch type models.
Originally sold by the thousands to GIs in a light long box with lures and huge flies . Mostly considered trinkets by collectors but memorial to GIs , they have little resale or fishing value. I have never seen any written history on them in English except the following. http://www.maxrod.net/article/
