QuestionMy father has passed and I'm picking out a fly rod for our son. It says Spinner above the handle in white ink. Also a yellow square with Brooklure written in it. The pole comes apart in three pieces and is 5 sided with a decal saying Genuine Tonkin Cane. It appears to be 9' plus change in length. The handle has a wrapped leather grip and electric tape--Thanks, Dad. The reel may be from his father since it appears quite old. I think I see the word Fritz on the outside--on the inside it has No.3 and US Pat Oct. 9, 1923 The rod guides have a goldish brown threading and then there are black bands as well. What can you tell me about this rod and reel? My son (age 27) wants to fly fish, but I want to give him something practical and since I don't know what this is I don't know what to do. It looks nice and is very straight despite having been hung on a wall for display. Also, if it can be used for fly fishing what weight line or other information will he need? Thanks so much!
AnswerSusan,
Spinner in white Ink tells me it was made by Horrocks-Ibbotson .
It is not very valuable. They are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were sort of mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. They are not going to resale for very much.
A small portion of these rods are decent fishing tools . It is the collector community that decides the prices , please don't blame the messenger.
I find two books are available at larger libraries to get history and or value:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) ,add 30% due to the age of the book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair

The Spinner model was made from the 20s to 50s. I would need a photo of logos /decals to put an exact date on it. You might check again I am pretty sure it has 6 sides.
I need maker/ model to help you with the reel - pictures to
[email protected] in order to look it up in Antique & Collectable Fishing Reels: Identification, Evaluation & Maintenance Homel, & Jellison. 1996.
It is probably a 6 weight. If it is under 4 oz without the reel, it is a practical fishing rod. In the 50s it ws 6 of 8 in quality and price. I fished a similar rod as my first fishing rods for many years.
Luck,
Mac
