lost rod part
Question
Somehow I have managed to lose the "metal tube/connector" that joins the two halves of my surfcasting rod. I guess it comes attached to the base section, and then the top section fits into it. What is this called? Do rod builders/shops offer such parts for sale? Where would I get one? Thanks so much!
Answer
Hi Jack,
The metal tube/connector part is called a ferrule. There is a female side and a male side. Sounds like you lost the female side somehow. It happens, we won't make you try to figure out how it got lost.
Any rod builder can measure the rod blank and order the proper ferrules and install them. If the builder does a lot of metal ferruled rods, there may be a set that fits in the shop already. To assure a proper fit, both ferrule parts should be replaced with a new set. The new ones may or may not look exactly like the ones that came on your rod. Size is critical and, on a surf rod, a reinforced ferrule set is probably best.
Any rod building supply house sells ferrule sets. If you decide to try this on your own, let me know and I'll walk you through the steps. It might be a fun project or you might prefer to just let a pro do it for you.
Thanks, Joe
