Fishing 3 hours north of thunder bay
Question
Hello,
On monday I am going 3 hours north of Thunder Bay to a remote lake for a fishing/family trip. The Lake has mainly pike and walleye. The pike are quite big(16-30") although most are in the low 20's. As for the walleye not sure but biggest i have caught there is 26". The water is full of leeches a and is murky. I was wondering what lures or setups i should be using to fish up there, during the day and the night. Let me know preferably before i leave, i know its short notice and you might not even get to check your emails.
thank you,
jordon
Answer
Hi Jordan,
I'm probably too late, but I'll respond anyway.
For the Pike it's hard to beat spoons and crankbaits. I like Doctor spoons and my favorite, the #2 Mepps Syclops. If the water is murky I'd go with brighter colors. As for crankbaits, a #9 Shad Rap will work well but something like an X-Rap will hold up better to the teeth of Pike. A bright or white spinnerbait will also work well for Pike.
The Shad Raps will work well for the Walleyes too. But the old standby for the walleyes will be a 3" to 4" twister tail on a 1/8th to 3/8th ounce jig head.
Another great bait for either species in murky water is a 1/2 ounce Rat-L-Trap (or similar). Fire tiger or gold would be my choices.
Sounds like a great trip. Hope you do well.
