QuestionI have a friend who inherited a fly rod from his grandpa and was told that it was only used for two fishing trips. He wants to know if it is valuable or if he can use it to learn to fly fish with. This is the information I have on the rod, it is a 3 piece octagonal eight foot pole with "granger select" and Wright and McGill stamped on the pole near the cork handle. On the reel seat it is stamped with "Pat. April 12, 1938" "Pat No 2114.107" and made by Wright & McGill Rod Co. Denver Colo USA. The rod looks very nice in condition, no lacquer missing and cork complete. There is no reel but has a canvas bag. I currently do not have pictures but can take if needed. Was wondering the approximate value so if he decides to go ahead and use this rod to learn with or if he will buy one instead to learn with. He will not sell this rod, for reasons of memories but was wondering of what its value is. Thanks for any help on this, have looked all over the Internet and not found any answers for him.

Could it be Granger "Special" not "select" ?
Price Book:Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book
Homel gives the 81/2 ft WRIGHT & MCGILL (Granger) model "Special" fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $85, 185 and $375 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
WRIGHT & MCGILL purchased Granger after WWII and made bamboo rods for about 10 years. That's the age of your rod, c. 1950s.
Luck,
Mac
