rated lure weight on rods

Question
Hi,just wanted to know what is the maximum weight a rod can throw over its rated weight; like I have a shimano cumara rod 7'2 medium heavy rod rated for 1/4 to 3/4 ounce and dont know if I would damage the rod throwing 7/8 ounce? Thank you for your time.

Hi Timothy,

You can get away with a little heavier lure like you mention.  Go easier on the cast so you don't over-strain it.  Most rods can cast a little more and a little less, but they cast best within the suggested range.  It's all about the loading of the tip section and how it responds back during the cast.  You may have to go to more of a lob, but honestly 7/8 is so close to 3/4 that you may not notice anything.
