QuestionHello! Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully answer my questions! It's greatly appreciated, :)
So, I have 2 rods I'll be selling on eBay, but before I went through the trouble of listing them I wanted to know what a decent asking price would be. Here's a description of each of the rods:
The first rod is a Howald Wonderod by Shakespeare. It has the product number 1370B, is 8' 6", and has the original guarantee tag that explains their replacement policy. I believe this is a fly fishing rod, but I'm not sure.
The second rod is a Montague, and I can't find any product numbers or anything printed on the rod except for a logo above the handle that says, "Montague Splitswitch" and "Genuine Tonkin" a bit above thel logo. This too is a fly fishing rod, I believe. Sorry I don't have more info on this one, :/
I've taken pictures of them both since I'm planning on listing them for sale, and if you click the links below it'll take you to said pictures.

Thank you so much for your expertise!!!
AnswerTrent,
The pictures did not work. When I went to the URLS you sent it says "The action that you were trying to perform has failed. "
Before selling on ebay you need to know that a reel (seat) goes below the handle on a fly rod , above on a casting rod. There is a big difference between a value for fly and casting rod.
When I sell on ebay I ebay I easily get 2 to 3 times what other are getting because of an accurate and informed description of, not only the rod but the condition.
These are some of the the things I may mention:
If you are asking for the id or value of an old rod please give a complete description , send pictures especially labels or logos to me,
[email protected] and a complete description including any of following that you can:
Is it? fly or casting rod ? Reel seat is below or above the cork handle ?
Check metal for id and patents ? What is it made of; bamboo ( flat sided) fiberglass or graphite ( round)? Weight in oz? What is the diameter (not circumference) of the rod above the handle? Where was it purchased ? What type of metal nickel-silver, tin, or chrome platted brass? A complete description of any logos or labels. Length of rod per section and number of sections. Total rod length.
Another important factor I need to help you , is the what is the rod made of. Bamboo rods resale for a whole lot more than fiberglass.
If your rods have flat sides (bamboo) they still are not very collectible. The Montague splitswitch was made to be both casting and fly rod.
Montagues are on the lowest when dealing with value and collectibility. Shakespeare is just a step up.
Suggestion - from the library get Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Read about condition and make an informed decision , write it up and you will get more on ebay,
Another book that can help you is Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair , which gives the history of both of your rods and dates them.
I write bamboo fly rod authentication and descriptions , e-mail me
[email protected] for pricing.
Luck,
Mac
