Gliebe pole
Question
I recently acquired a Gliebe pole with the following information on it: "830", "Brooklyn 21 NY" "Owens Corning Fiberglass".
Can you tell me anything about it, like what year, value, etc? Thank you.
Answer
Hi William,
I have done some searching in the past on The Gliebe Company but I found very little information on available. It does appear to have done business from about 1902-1960 or so...at least, in Brooklyn...but it does not look like it was a rod building company. It was probably a retail outlet selling private label rods made by others with the Gliebe name on them. I don't know this for certain, but suspect it is the case.
I have found links to online auctions for rods with the Gliebe name that were listed in the $20-$50 range. This one is fiberglass and the blank was made by Owens-Corning. Fiberglass would indicate sometime from the early 1950s forward. I do not know who actually built the fiberglass blanks into rods for Gliebe but I am pretty sure Owens-Corning did not do anything besides make the raw blank.
Your rod can be fished with assuming all components are present and there are no cracks or splits or any obvious damage.
Thanks, Joe
