Genuine Black River Tonkin Cane Rods
Question
I have 2 Black River Genuine Tonkin Cane Rods, one is a casting rod and one is a fly rod. Both are in very good condition, some wear on the cork handles. Can you please give me some idea of their value?
Thank you very much for your time.
Answer
Hi Mary Lynn,
Black River is a model name used by Horrocks-Ibbotson so I assume your rods were made by H-I. The older bamboo casting rods tend to have lower values than the fly rods.
In Good-Very Good condition, the fly rod value would be in the $60-$75 range; the casting rod would be in the $40-$60 range. H-I was probably the largest mass producer of bamboo rods during their heyday. The large number of rods means there are still lots of them around. Also, the quality was not considered high in comparison with other rod makers which tends to keep the values lower among collectors.
Thanks, Joe
