48 inch bamboo fishing rod
Question
I have a cute vintage 48 inch 1 piece bamboo fishing rod. Is it a child's rod? Above the reel written in paint in cursive it says Tonkin Cane on one side and it looks like "Macy's Cyclone" on the other. The eyes say Allan. I am not finding any info.on small rods. Thankyou for any information you may be able to provide.
Answer
Hi Deb,
I doubt that it is a child's rod. I assume it is a bait casting rod. Other Macy's labelled rods I have seen have actually been made by Horrocks-Ibbotson for Macy's since Macy's did not build fishing rods. If the writing on your rod is done in white ink (it may look golden under the varnish), it's a sure bet that this one was also made by H-I.
H-I did make several short bait casting rod models. It would not be unusual for them to have made this one for Macy's. H-I appears to have had a long term relationship with Macy's.
If all these assumptions are correct, value would be in Poor-Fair condition in the $20-$25 range; in Good-Very Good condition in the $40-$50 range; and in Excellent-Mint condition in the $60-$80 range. In reality, these old bamboo casting rods don't sell all that well and typically struggle to bring half of the values listed above.
It may be more valuable as an interesting wall decoration with a good story.
Thanks, Joe
