flyrod identification
Question
I have a split bamboo flyrod in three sections - each section is three feet. The reel seat is below the cork handle. Above the cork handle on one side of the rod is written "Tonkin Cane." On the opposite side in an elongated diamond with a white border, red interior, and written "Sport King (?) king is only partially visible. To the right of that logo is handwritten, M/33.
Does M/33 indicate the year it was made? I am wondering how old it is, and if it has any value. Any information would be helpful. Thank you very much.
Answer
Ron,
I changed your question to public so others can read it , too.
I am pretty sure you have a Montgomery Wards rod , made by Horrocks - Ibbotson Co. H-I used the words "Genuine Tonkin Cane" and red triangle labels.
The model "Sport King" is not in my books:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell
Fishing Tackle: A Collector's Guide Hardcover, 1991 Graham Turner
Collectors only want known makers and models. Your rod is worth 25 or less. It would be a great project rod to refinish.
M/33 is Montgomery Ward model 33. Your rod was probably made in the 50s.
You might find a Monkey Wards catalog to confirm the above by asking about M33 at Clark's Classic Bamboo Rod Forum at:
