What do I have?
Question
I have obtained a sport king bamboo fly rod still in the sock it was sold in.it has two tips and one is roughly two inches shorter than the other. The rod itsself only says sport king but the label on the sock says model 30 9 Foot 60-6666 . I was hoping you could yell me exactly what I have and what it might cost me to have a rod like this restored. Also does it drop the value of an old rod such as the one I have if you have it restored?
Answer
Hello
Sports King was sold by Montgomery Ward. Unfortunately, your it appears one tip as been repaired..since its shorter than the other.
I would estimate value on your rod of $10-40 depending on condition of the bamboo finish, winding and reel seat.
I would not recommend investing in a restoration of the rod. However, you could purchase rod varnish if you want to touch it up.
Note, once the varnish breaks down, the bamboo dries out, becoming very fragile.
