origin of fly rod
Question
A friend of mine has an old bamboo fly rod in excellent condition. The brand appears to be the South Bend Bait Co., Rod #47 9', on the rod shank "HCH of 4CH" There is a thumb groove on the cork handle and says "comfortable and efficient grip". Can you please advise how I would go about researching the origin and time frame of it's construction? Thanks you.
Answer
Bruce,
The best research tool for dating is:
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
He has done a great job of researching , has a large section on South Bend, with pictures of labels that help you pin it down.
Price book: Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
You should find both of this books at the library.
I have the information if you want it.
