Brooklure
Question
Hello, I have a Brooklure fly rod in good+ condition. It is marked Sun Valley Steel Center and has extra tip and an aluminum carrying tube. Please forward your estimate of value. Thanks for your time.
Answer
Hi Rodney,
The Brooklure fly rods appear to have been made for Spiegel by the Horrocks-Ibbotson company. They were sold through their mail order catalog by Spiegel.
A typical H-I rod today in Good-Very Good condition would be worth somewhere in the $60-$100 range. H-I rods were mass produced and are not held in high esteem by collectors. However, they did make some fairly nice rods and it is possible to find one that casts and fishes well.
The "Steel Center" refers to an actual thin steel rod that runs through the center of the rod. This was an H-I addition to rods in the 1930s to help eliminate bamboo rods taking a set or curve.
Thanks, Joe
