Stung by a catfish
Question
I went fishing not to long ago about two weeks ago in the intercoastal waterways near my house in Pinellas County, Fla. I caught two good sized catfished and in the process of trying to unhook them I was poked/stabbed by the barbs on the fins. It burned like heck for a couple minutes and bled quite a bit. I then cleaned the punctured areas with alcohol and continued fishing. It's now been two weeks and I'm still feeling discomfort and itching, can this be caused by some sort of poison? and what should I do if is poison?
Answer
Catfish in Florida Saltwater do sting. I am not sure what the results are, but I would go to a Doctor as soon as possible to get this looked at. I believe this is a chemical that is exuded from the top fin near the head. NEVER EVER when taking one of these fish off a hook touch the fin near the head or any fin.
From an article on line:
If you happen to hook up with a saltwater catfish, please take caution when trying to de-hook on, they have barbs on their face that will cut and sting the hell out of you if you are careful. The sting can be compared to some of the fish in the stingray family but just not as deadly. So to me saltwater catfish are nothing but bait thieves, shark food, and a fish that actually puts up a decent fight on some very light tackle.
