QuestionQUESTION: Hi Jim,
I'm interested in going on a freshwater fishing trip somewhere in the US. I've done the whole saltwater deep sea fishing trip and now i'm ready to tackle freshwater trophies. Can you recommend a fish and a state to target? I want to fish for something that i can hang on my wall and be proud of. I was thinking catfish but im really open for anything? I live in NY but i would like to travel for this trip. Any ideas?

ANSWER: I can make several suggestions.
If you like to EAT fish, I highly recommend a trip to Alaska. Alaska Discount Vacations...
www.1alaskaadventure.com has some very good freshwater fishing for Salmon, Trout, Dolly Varden, Grayling, and Pike if you do not mind spending extra for a Fly Out to Native American Lake on the Aleutian Chain peninsula.
Prices start at $899.00 for 3 Fishing Trips and a week on the Kenai in a Cabin.
The Kenai River is the home of the top 8 King Salmon of all time.
In Canada I can highly recommend Muskie Fishing at Green Island Lodge. www.GreenIslandlodge.com
There are world record Muskie in that lake, and the last Muskie over 60 INches was caught out of Lake Manitou where the lodge is located. I personally caught a 14 pound lake record Walleye there 3 summers back. The lake is not advertised as a Walleye lake, as it does not have many in it, but the ones you catch are all BIG.
Lake Okeechobee for Largemouth Bass is really taking off. www.Okeechobeeguide.com
I can also recommend a real adventure for you if you are interested in Peacock Bass. I have a company I work with that takes folks to a remote location in Brazil that is brand new and just opened up. It is on the Roosevelt River and it is 50 miles from where a new species of pig was discovered 3 years ago. Fishing is for Peacock Bass, Pirarara, Pacu, and quite a few other BIG fish, including the largest freshwater scaled fish on the planet. www.groupfishingtrip.com click on the link for Brazil. OR go to www.FGHP.com for more info on it as well. Last I checked the cost was around $2600 for a week including the airfare, but not including tackle, or tips.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for the input. After talking to friends I've decided to go for giant catfish. Can you recommend a particular area for giant catfish? Is there a particular state that is better then the rest? I would prefer to stay in the continental U.S. Any thoughts?
Answer
Big Cat Fish

Here is a list of some of the best Catfish Guides in the United States.
I highly recommend Santee Cooper Lake. One of the best is
Captain Tom Gregory. He was ill last time I talked to him, but should have recovered by now.
If not there are several good guides on that lake listed on the page. You can double up and fish for Striped Bass in Santee Cooper too.
Remember to let them know FGHP.com referred you.
