Question
gliebe rod 1
sir: i have aquired a "GLIEBE" fishing rod and would like some information regarding same. It is 54" long with a knurled or possibly hand carved wooden handle. It has a one piece square metal shaft that tapers to a flat end . It appears to be polished stainless steel or possibly chrome plated . Here in the niagara river area we would call it a "Muskie Rod".It has a rubber knob on the handle with the original Gliebe decal intact. There are no identifying numbers on it. Any information regarding it would be appreciated along with aprox value . It is in very good original shape . I would be happy to email additional pictures if it would help identify it . thank you very much. ------greg metzger
AnswerHi Greg,
The Gliebe company was a sporting goods company in Brooklyn, NY. They did not make rods. Rather, they had rods made by other companies and their name put on the labels. This is a common practice in the industry and these are called trade or private label rods.
I've seen a number of fiberglass rods bearing the Gliebe name but this is the first steel rod. It was probably made by someone like Horton Maunufacturing or American Fork & Hoe. It is solid extruded steel and is in the form of a boat rod for either saltwater or large freshwater fish. If it were intended for saltwater use, it may have a plating or coating of some sort. It would likely do well for Muskie fishing.
In very good condition, the rod would be valued in the $30-$50 range. There is not much of a market for steel rods, but this one is in the vintage boat rod style and that style is becoming popular again with fishermen.
Thanks, Joe
