Question
UTK Bamboo Flyrod
Logo found on the handle U-T-K inside a diamond shape. Three piece, 9 1/2 ft and includes an extra tip section. It's been in my possession since the early fifties, it was given to me by a relative. I am curious to know the age of the rod and as well, the approximate value of the rod if I was to consider selling it. I have two more pictures if neccessary, one of the tips/joints and one of all pieces
AnswerBob,
According to Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair , the UTK label was used by Horrocks Ibbotson from 1905 to 1919. The many intermediate thread wraps in my experience that they didn't trust their animal hide glue.
Generally H-I rods are not very collectible or valuable. This rod has some historic value and it may be the most you can get for it, is to donate it to a museum and take a tax write off.
Actual retail value depends a great deal on condition.
It is very difficult to determine condition from a picture.. Condition is more than a subject opinion.
Books: Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification %26 Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.

To pin down a specific value it would help a lot to determine the model . Homel does not mention a 9.5 foot model , but several 9 footers.
Homel gives the average US dollar value for H-I bamboo fly rods as $22, 62, and 115 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
I might get as much as three hundred if properly presented.
I quote these books written by researchers so you know I am not making it all up, But I include my experience as well.
It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.
Luck,
Mac
