QuestionI would like to identify maker and model of my grandfather's two bamboo or cane fly rods, and if it is determined to be worth it, restore them for use or at minimum for display.
My grandfather, Joseph Barr was a builder in NY & Boston, artist and fly fisherman (Campfire Club, NY). I believe the two poles are custom made and may be valuable.
Each has three sections, cork and metal base. One needs significant repair on the base unit as to cork and some split bamboo, but I believe both are complete for the most part. If I were to date them it would be 1917 and used until 1948.
Please tell me what characteristics to look for. I can send digital pictures if that helps. I have them in Palo Alto CA and can be contacted at or by cell phone .
Thanks
Pete
AnswerHi Pete,
I'll be happy to do what I can to help.
Send photos to
[email protected] and I'll review them. For each rod, take pictures of:
1. the complete rod, all pieces laying side-by-side.
2. the reel seat
3. the cork handle
4. any decals, inscriptions or writing on the rod
5. the ferrules
6. the stripper guide
7. a typical line guide
8. the rod bag, if present
9. the rod tube, if present
10. any damage, discoloration, loose wraps, stains, etc.
11. the name of the rod builder, if known
That should be more than enough to get me started. If I need more, I'll reply via email.
Thanks, Joe
