combo fly/casting wright &McGill Trailmaster

Question
I bought this rod that can be converted from casting to fly rod by removing some moving parts on the rod.
The problem is that the moving parts don't move, they are stuck.
This rod has not been used since the 50s and I do not know how to release these sticky parts.
Can you help me please.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Answer
Hi Henry,

This happens on the multi-piece rods when they don't get taken apart often and cleaned once in a while.  On these pack rods that can change from spinning to fly rod by changing the handle configuration, the various handle pieces are held together with metal ferrules.  The metal ferrules collect grit and grime and water and fish slime and get stuck after what is often years of not being used (i.e. taken apart).  I've had success at unsticking these with the use of heat...low heat...don't get carried away.

A hair dryer or heat gun on its lowest setting will work.  Aim the heat flow as directly at the stuck ferrule as possible and allow it to heat the metal and surrounding area...don't get too close.  Be careful and check often to make sure you are not burning cork or wraps or paint or the rod shaft.  The goal is simply to heat the ferrule joint a bit and allow the metal to expand.   Test it every few seconds to see if the joint can be separated.  It does take time and patience, but it does work.  Give it a try and see how it works for you.  Resist the temptation to turn the heat up high, this will easily do damage to some of the rod components.

Once you have the pieces apart, clean the male and female sides of the ferrules with size "0000" steel wool to remove the built up grit and grime.  You can get a commercial ferrule lubricant at most sporting goods stores which will help ease assembly and take down of the rod.  You can also use one of those left over slivers of dried soap from the bar soap in your shower; but the commercial stuff is probably better in the long run.  Take the pieces apart from time to time and keep them cleaned for best performance.

Thanks,   Joe
