Orvis Battenkill Mfg Data
Question
Hello Mac - I stumbled upon your site by accident, and thought I would ask this question. I own an Orvis Battenkill Rod, 8' 4 3/8 oz, serial #46211 and with writing that notes "H.C.H. (7) or G.B.F. (8)". I tried that site that gives the list of Orvis numbers and related data, but I could only get up to #4646 dated 12/22/47. It seems like there should be multiple pages, but I can get nothing beyond that. Can you advise me when my rod was made and by whom?? If you could, I would certainy be most greatful to know!! Thanks in advance, Alan
Answer
Alan,
I agree the serial number is not in http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2h7gi/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/orvis.htm
I have seen several other serial numbers not in the database.
Price book: Antique %26 Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification %26 Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the following Battenkill rod , with an extra tip, 2 sections a value for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Battenkill fly rod 8' (2/2) c.1980 125 275 450
But did not get number of sections from you.
My guess it was Built by George Reid or Bill Young.
Most Battenkills are 70s rods, but they start in 48 and continue. Impregnation was invented by Jordon in 1946. HCH says 50s to me , it's the line weight used before AFTMA was established in 1960.
I have heard if you call Orvis 888-235-9763, they have a non digital , paper source with more complete serial numbers. I have also heard that if you ask for a value they will give you Lens phone number but if you ask for age then maker you will get some help
Luck,
Mac
I quote these books written by researchers so you know I am not making it all up, But I include my experience as well.
It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.
Luck,
Mac
