Phillipson
Question
Hi I cam across my great grandfathers old flyrod from Colorado. It has Plillipson Pacemaker on one side and what looks like 67 8 1/2 5 hdh on the other. It measures 8' 5" and breaks into three pieces w/ an extra end piece. it is made of bamboo and is a flyrod. It comes w/ the original case, and cloth bag. He was the original ownwer. It is in mint shape w/ one minor scrape. What can you tell me about it and a value? I just got rid of a
7' WRIGHT-MCGILL GRANGER VICTORY BAMBOO FLY ROD 3oz that he had.
Thank you
Bob
Answer
Bob,
Price Book:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book
Homel gives the PHILLIPSON 8.5 model Pacemaker with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $75, 175 and $310 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively
'It is in mint shape with one minor scrape' is an oxymoron. It can't be both.
Mint means unused and well protected. The sections are all straight and unbroken , of equal length.
Excellent is lower than mint and means like brand new. The finish and threads are not worn or sluffing. No sets - sections aren't bent.
Summary ?Excellent Condition
1 Fine, original finish
2 No missing sections or components
3 No breaks, fractures, dirt or wear
4 Shows evidence of only minimal use
5 Original bag and case with tags and labels
Pretty sure your rod is in good condition but check Homel at your local library.

I quote these books written by researchers so you know I am not making it all up, But I include my experience as well.
It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.
