Question
Rod & Reel
Hey Joe,
Another question on American Handle&Hoe Company fishing rods. I recently bought one at an estate auction. The reel is a Pflueger model# 1983L in great condtion with some wear. The rod is a No.RC3 1/2 made by American Handle & Hoe Company. What era or year in paticular was this equipment released.
The cork handle is half gone, are there replacement handles, I plan on hanging it on the wall. That said, as bad as I hate to ask, what is the worth of each item or total worth together.
Thanks Joe, I learn a lot from your Q&A

AnswerHi Carl,
American Fork & Hoe Company built steel rods in various forms in the early part of the 20th century, probably the 1910-1940 time frame or so. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of collector vlaue for these rods, but they do make good fishing rods. Value after the cork is replaced would only be in the $5-$10 range.
You should be able to obtain a suitable replacement cork handle to restore the rod to useful condition. Try any of the rod building supply houses for the proper part. Angler's Workshop, Batson, Acidrod, Mudhole, Merrick, Jann's, etc, would be places to look.
The reel is suited well to the rod in terms of time period but it doesn't have much collector value either. Perhaps $10-$15 or so.
It will make a nice wall hangeror it will make a nice fishing rod if you choose to use it.
Thanks, Joe
