Congress reel
Question
I recently acquired a congress waterwitch reel in a batch of non functional reels on the big auction site. I can't find any info. about it on the net. It's a small(approx.2"x 2') direct drive casting reel with 08 or 80 stamped on the bottom of the reel seat. Any ideas as to collectibility, value, age, etc? Thanks
Answer
Jim,
Congress made middle to low end priced fishing tackle out of PA by the Supplee-Biddle Hardware company.
The 80 stands for the spool capacity - 80 yards of silk thread.
They run from $5-30 depending condition, original box. But, prices are down with the economy and reels prices drop quickly if the reel isnt near mint.
I would estimate pre WWII on age.
you can get a 2nd opinion - search Orca Fishing Reels, select Reel Talk on the right.
