Question
heddon rod
Hello Joe, I have a question regarding a very old Heddon rod that I have. It measures 36" from the butt to the top eyelet. It is stamped Heddons made in USA. I found this rod with a Heddon Wionna reel on it, but I am not sure if they belong together. I will send you pictures of the rod by itself and with the reel attached. I was able to reference the reel, however I am not able to find the rod in my books. I am interested in selling this item and would appreciate any information that you might have on it. Thank you so much for offering this information on this site. Thanks again, Jim
AnswerHi Jim,
My Heddon book lists the following models for bait rods at 36" length:
Model - 2 1/2, made in 1921 & 1922...but only in two piece, your rod is a one piece.
Model - 3 1/2 King Special or Wisconsin Special, made 1922-1932...a one piece rod...sold for $5.00 to $6.00 new.
The majority of Heddon casting rods were built in the offset two piece style. The Model 3 1/2 King Special/Wisconsin Special was made in one piece style for "heavy river fishing". There should be a number written in black ink at the base of the bamboo rod shaft on your rod. With any luck it will be a 3 1/2.
I have to assume the rod is fairly rare. I would guess its value to be in the $75-$150 range.
Thanks, Joe
