Shakespeare Fly Rod #1358
Question
My great uncle left me this bamboo fly rod MODEL 1358. Looks like he never used it - cork handle is like new. Has two tip sections. I do not fish and want to give it to a friend who does fish - questions: What is the value of this rod circa 1936-1940? Can it still be used for fishing after all these years?
Answer
Chris,
Value from :
Antique %26 Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification %26 Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the Shakespeare Model 1358 fly rod 8 1/2' (3/2) c.1950 with an extra tip, 3 sections the value of $25, 70 and $135 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. You did not mention length - shorter rods sell for more. 9 foot rods are the norm and se;ll for less. The 10-15 years isn't going to add alot more value. Check ebay but a rod like yours might bring $200 at best.
Fishing it - The tinsel strength of old bamboo is as strong as steel. It will take a 180 degree bend better than modern graphite.
Most rods are broken by doors and feet.
You need to make sure there is finish on all bamboo parts and the ferrules are not loose.
If water gets into ferrules or on any bamboo and is not dried it can create weakness. It rots just like wood.
I quote these books written by researchers so you know I am not making it all up, But I include my experience as well.
It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.
Luck,
