Question
Battenkill ferrule
My 1949 is Battenkill needs a ferrule re-wrap on one tip and a repair where the edge of the ferrule dug into the cane over the years. A heat gun did not seem to loosen it. Any suggestions? Also would you use original resourcinol glue on the cane or the new flexible epoxy?
AnswerJim,
First to remove a ferrule - make sure there is not a pin / nail . If the pin is not removed then the heat gun won't work.
Number one try pulling with hands only ?don't use pliers or tools .
If that doesn't work apply just a little heat - Use a non carbon base flame or heat source such as a hair drier , alcohol lamp, steam from a tea kettle or heat gun. Don't use a candle . Many times a cigarette lighter (butane , Bick , commonly sold # will be enough . Heat the round edge #end) of male ferrules , never near the rod . Apply only a little heat and then pull with a leather glove or kitchen mitt. A male ferrule can become a jet engine if you heat near the rod and fly off like a bullet. Turn the rod when applying heat , there by distributing the heat.
I built a ferrule puller to use in conjunction with heat ?please find pictures of it on

The first picture is an old timer from someone else抯 shop, the second one is mine and may give you an idea how to make one yourself..
Basically its a 8- 10 inch piece of 1 X 2 with holes drilled of various sizes . The board is cut through the holes . I put a piece of leather across the top to give it a hinge , tacked and glue . It helps to extend the grip of the ferrule closer to 360 degrees when applying heat and pulling.
Pulling ferrules is a skill , go slow , take you time with heat and you can learn it. You are heating the metal and turning it allot.
Resourcinol glue is hard to deal with. I did not know that your rod used it . It should have blue or purple glue lines , does it ? I think to glue ferrules, you could use epoxy.
Here's the error I see most beginning restores make. They don't recognize the finish is in bad condition. They fish the rod after doing minor repairs, like a ferrule rewrap . Water gets on the bamboo and is not dried , rots and breaks. My advice is , when in doubt , strip the rod , rewrap all and dip finish.
It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.
