JC Higgins rods
Question
I am trying to identify a rod I bought at an auction. It is a JC Higgins with a cork handle, nothing unusual except it is a short one-piece rod and the rod itself seems to be metal. Everything I've researched about the old JC Higgins rods made for Sears refers to bamboo rods, but I have found nothing about metal ones. I think it is metal because it is a bit rusted and also is not round, but is squared off with edges. Was it once covered by something else and that has been taken off to reveal this metal core, or was it always like this? Please help me figure this out. I admit to being ignorant about such things.
Answer
Sherry; I am mostly ignorant about such things. I did have a square steel rod at one time many years ago. I do not remember where it came from or where it eventually went. It was my first casting rod. I sent for a new Heddon "Pal" reel to put on it and used it for several years.
About all I can tell you is that this was an all steel rod except the handle which I believe was cork. It was not a very good rod for casting but I did catch a few bass on it.
I'm sorry I cannot be of more help. Did you try contacting Sears? I will do some research on the web and if I find anything I will see if I can find a way to get it to you.
Thank you for calling on me to answer (not too well)your question.
