QuestionI'm looking to add an older glass rod to my collection, and have recently come across a good candidate: it's a Fenwick FF 756, a 7'-6", 6wt model (I can only surmise that the 756 means 7.5 feet, 6wt). The rod itself appears (from a few digital photos) to be in good working condition. While its certainly seen its share of use, the blank seems to be in good condition, and there doesn't seem to be any major flaws in the well-used, weathered cork. The hardware looks fine as well. Not like it was never used, but still very much in good working order.
The rod comes with its sock, but just a generic PVC rod tube.
I understand (from other reading) that the 756 isnt a terribly rare or sought after model, but neither is it regarded as a failure or a 'cheapie'. It seems to have been a good, all-purpose, mid-level rod of its time.
What sort of a price would you expect this rod to command in a person-to-person (not at a shop) sale? My initial thoughts were in the $45-$60 range, but I'm really not sure.
AnswerHi Mark,
You seem to have things under control. It is a 7'6" rod in 6wt and 2-piece configuration. It likely came originally in one of those brown triangular shaped plastic tubes with the Fenwick logo on it. They are not hard to find if you want to change out the PVC tube. It is not terribly rare, but getting scarce and many of my clients fish only with the older Fenwick rods and consider them much better than mid-level. As to value, I think at $45-$60 you are in the right range for this rod in Good condition. If it were in Excellent-Mint condition, perhaps more in the $90-$120 range.
This will be a moderate action rod, probably slower than any newer graphite rod you may be using. It should fish quite well and be a fun rod to fish with.
Thanks, Joe
