Bass fishing using Buzz baits
Question
I want to get another rod and reel just for using buzz baits. I have a Johnny Morris that I will use when using worms ect. I would like to purchase a 7.1 along with the right rod for throwing buzz baits. What would you suggest along with line preference? Oh, I fish farm ponds in IA for Bass. Thanks, Glenn
Answer
Hi there! Sorry for taking forever, just alot of work to be done:] Well as far as a reel would go your right on, either a 6.2-1 gear ratio or a 7.1 gear ratio will work just fine. A really good reel would be a shimano curado CU200E7 or if you prefer CU201E7 if you like the handle on the left side, other reel makers build reels in these gear ratios, I like the shimano because of the size and weight. As far as a rod goes I would recommend a rod at least 7 feet long with medium to medium heavy power fast action, the reason being a 7 foot rod will allow longer casts and for you to have more control over the fish. Some guys like a little slower rod similar to a crank bait rod to not pull the bait away too fast when a bass busts up on top, but I found time and time again a fast action will do just fine, especially if your around any cover like weeds or lillypads where bass generally are. As line goes MONOFILAMENT! A heavy mono has the tendency to float, and the reason you want to use mono is that its going to help keep the buzzbait up and not create too much drag.Using braided line is not good, sure it floats to but remember it has no stretch so when you do get a strike its WAY to easy to pull the bait away, and have it come flying back at you. Fluorocarbon sinks because its dense and this line is never a good choice when fishing any topwater. Another advantage of mono it has stretch so when you go to set the hook it will buy you some time for the fish to get it in his mouth. Farm ponds are great places to find and catch bass or pike,or other types of fish, if fishing from shore fan cast the entire area with different techniques before moving down to the next spot, remember to comb the water column top to bottom, and you'll increase your odds of catching a big one,who knows you might catch the next state record! I hope I answered your question, Good fishin! P.S. if you want to find tackle that some places might not have check out www.tacklewarehouse.com or www.basstackledepot.com
