Answer
Chris; The lake I live on and fish a lot has thousands of gators. I have seen them up to 15 feet long I fish from a boat and have seen many many of them in the water where I am fishing.
Mostly they move away when you approach but if there are babys around be careful not to get too close to them. I have never had one approach my boat except on a few occasions when one gets the idea that he wants to eat my lure. Most of the time they turn away when they see the boat.
I wouldn't mess with a big one or tease them. They are wild animals and can be dangerous if they are teased. I don't think there is any danger of just being on the water where they are and fishing. I have hooked a few small ones and one night I accidently hooked a big one. It was dark and I did not see him. He grabbed the ;ire and started away. I just held on and he broke my line and kept on going I hated to lose that $7 lure but I certainly wasn't going to try to get it back from him.
Still basically I do not think they are likely to bother you while fishing unless you bother them first. I have heard of them grabbing a fish they has been hooked but I think that is just them trying for an easy meal of fish not attacking you.
I hope this eases your mind. They are wild animals and like most wild animals they have a fear of humans unless humans have fed them and caused them to lose that fear. Never try to feed them. Besides in many states it is against the law to feed them.
Thank you for calling on me to answer your question. I hope you get some of those big bass in your lake.
