QuestionHello,
You recently posted a question to Robin Sayler in category Fishing:
Dear Sir, I have in my possession what I to believe is a very old rod. It is in excellent condition, and still in it's original case, and with description sticker from E.F. Payne Rod Company New York. The rod has descriptions sold by Abercrombie Finch and the rod has on the opposite side E.F.Payne on it . I am told it is set up for an automatic reel made by in the early 1900s.It also has a name engraved on the front under the clear coat ..The name reads Marie C. Heinsich. This rod contains 1 butt piece and 2 different weighted tops pieces. This rod looks as if it has never been used or even out of its original casing. If you can relay anymore information on the vintage and value of this rod it would be appreciated...Thank You
Gary
AnswerHi Gary,
E.F. Payne rods, even those sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, are valuable antiques. In near original condition, the value can be significant. Perhaps you can provide some additional information to help determine the specific model? Jim Payne took over the rod business following the death of his father (Ed) in 1914, and operated the business until 1968.
I assume this is a fly rod. The 2/2 configuration indicates a shorter rod...say 8.5' or less.
The rod could be used with either an automatic reel or a regular wind reel depending on which the owner prefers. If it has an automatic reel with it, the reel may or may not have collector value of its own, depending on the reel make and model.
Is there a model number written on the rod?
How long is the rod?
Are all three pieces the same length?
Do you have the original rod bag?
Do you have original rod tube?
Are there any other markings on the rod, bag or tube?
If possible, send a photo via email to
[email protected] and I'll review it.
I assume that Marie C. Heinsich is the name of the original owner of the rod.
Any additional data you can provide will help identify the model which will help date the rod and establish an estimated value.
Thanks, Joe
