Question
Heddon fly rod
I was wondering the value and year built of a Heddon Deluxe Peerless fly rod. # 35- 8 1/2'- 2F- HDH or E is what is printed on the rod. It is a hexigonal 3 peice rod with an extra tip. On the case it states it is a tempered, split bamboo rod. It appears to be in great condition. The only other number i can find on it is a patend number on the nut of the reel seat, #1807078. Thank you for any information that you can give me.
AnswerJeff,
The earliest your Heddon was made is 1951 , latest is their shut down of bamboo rods in 1954. I know this to be true because the writing is on the flats and not across them.
You can confirm this information in Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair , probably at the library. There will be no serial numbers.
I can't see the finish to help you with condition. But the handle looks dark possibly dirty.
Value from Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the Heddon model #35 "Deluxe" fly rod 8 1/2' with an extra tip, 3 sections the value of $80, 185 and $335 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Luck,
Mac
