QuestionHave you ever heard of a Krider making an 8 foot, 3 piece, bamboo fly fishing rod. My dad has this beautiful rod...not sure if he is remembering the name correctly. There is a featherweight reel seet on it. Thread, red.
AnswerHi Melanie,
Two things....
First, paraphrasing A.J. Campbell's, "Classic & Antique Fishing Tackle" reference book, John Krider was a Philadelphia gunsmith, machinist, author and maker of fishing tackle from roughly 1836 to 1880 or so. He imported, wholesaled and retailed sporting goods. By the late 1860s he was selling split bamboo rods "of his own make", apparently both four strip and six strip rods.
John Krider rods are extremely rare, very high quality and exist basically only in collections. If this is a John Krider rod, you need to find an appropriate appraisal service and find out as much as possible about the rod.
Second, C. M. Kreider was a rod maker in the 1940s who produced bamboo fly rods. These are quality rods but little is known about the various models he made. Kreider rods in Good-Very Good condition would be valued in the $250-$300 range; and, in Excellent-Mint condition in the $500-$600 range.
I am going to assume your rod is one made by C. M. Kreider around the 1940s or so. If I'm wrong, send me an email at

Thanks, Joe
