information on spinning rod
Question
Hi, I am seeking some info ofn a rod given to me by a friend. It belonged to his father and has never been used . I think it is a model from the 1960's. I asked someone else and they told me it was a fly pole.I assure you it is not a fly pole. to start it is a Berkley. model P 30 L. It is in a tube about 4 feet long, the tube is gray plastic with black plastic top that unscrewsand has a silver chain attached to the lid so when you open it ,the lid stays attached. the bottom is black plastic with holes in it to drain water. On the tube there is a sticker with the berkley logo inside a red hear and the heart is in a red circle.the sicker also reads,"This IS Your New para-metric Spinning Rod, Model P 30 L, with "Live Action" ferrule.made in USA by Berkley and company."
inside the rod is in a brown fitted sock. the pole is kind of dark brown, possibly mahogany. It has the model and all the info as the case on the bottom half of the pole. This rod has never been used, and it feels great, i would like to get a reel that was recommended for the pole at the time it was manufactured.
I will have some pics tomorrow.
Answer
Hi William,
I know exactly what it looks like. I like the Berkley Parametric rods.
Of all the Berkley rod models the Parametric was their best. The Parametric design has exceptional damping characteristics, casts and handles well. The rod is fiberglass treated with a wood grain decal application. You have a very nice rod.
I would pair it with a quality modern reel with as high a ball bearing count as you can afford. That will give you a smooth action reel to go along with the nice action of this rod. It should be very enjoyable to fish with once you get the reel.
I don't have a data in my books on the value of the rod, but in my shop I would sell it for not less than $100.
Thanks, Joe
