Question
unknown fly rod
My son-in-law has a fly rod that was a gift to him from his previous ex. He has no idea what he has as it has no markings at all, except for a painted on personalization from her to him. How can I tell if it is graphite or fiberglass? Thank you.
Mark
AnswerHi J Mark,
It's hard to tell from a picture but from what I see, it is probably a graphite. It looks like a fairly new rod for saltwater or bigger freshwater fish like Bass, pike or musky.
For it to be fiberglass, it would have probably been made in the 60's through the early 70's. So, I'd be about 95% sure that the rod shown is graphite. The only problem I see is that if there are no markings on it you may not remember what line should be on it. Take it to a good fly shop and they will be able to figure that out and also verify that it is graphite.
It looks like a nice travel rod. I have some advise on what to do with a rod like that. Pack it in a suitcase with a reel and a 9 weight line, and get on a plane headed for Florida and bend it on some baby Tarpon, snook, or a few redfish!
Looks like a nice rod. Have fun with it.
Good luck.
Marc
