Fly rod set

QUESTION: Hello Joe,, I tried the hair dryer on the tip section on my old fly rod. Not much luck. Should I be patient and just keep working at it, or are there other methods ?. Thanks for the help..

What kind of fly rod is this one?  Are the ferrules metal, fiberglass or graphite?

Also, did you try either of the other methods to pull it apart?

QUESTION: Thanks for the repy. The rod is an old Bamboo Wards Premium that I have had since the 50's. The ferrules are metal. No I'm not aware of the pull it apart method. So far all I tried was useing the hair dryer to remove the set in the tip section..I have removed all the guides for the refinish.

Sorry...ignore my last message.  I thought you were asking some sort of follow up to the question I answered just before yours arrived.  I'm old...I make mistakes.

If you are trying to remove a set in the tip section of your bamboo rod, you need to stick with the hair dryer technique.  It can be a slow process.  The two biggest mistakes you can make are trying to use too much heat and trying to go too fast in the process.

Keep at it slow and steady.  It may help to do 20-30 minutes of working with the tip each day and then letting it rest over night.  I have had success in allowing the material to adjust its "memory" in bits over a few days time.
